Touring Caravan Insurance FAQs

No, there is no legal requirement to have separate insurance for your caravan but there are a few reasons that make it essential in many cases.

For touring caravans, if you have bought it using a loan or consumer credit, you need to ask yourself what you would do if it was stolen or badly damaged.

Your motor insurance will normally cover the liability for damage caused by you/your caravan whilst being towed but once it's detached from your car the car insurance will not usually provide any cover for injuries or damaged caused by your caravan. You should check that your motor policy covers you when towing.

Yes, we are delighted to offer the same cover to customers in Northern Ireland as we do the rest of the UK.

Yes, adding extra security will normally give you a discount.

Some security devices like hitch locks and wheel clamps will normally be required as a minimum but additional devices like alarms and trackers will get you a discount on your premium.

Theft is a big issue for caravan owners and regardless of the protection you get from your insurance policy it is far better not to have your caravan stolen in the first place.

When choosing a storage facility it is usually best to use an accredited caravan storage facility approved by CASSOA or one of the major caravan associations.

If you are storing the caravan at home you should consider additional security such as a removable parking post or bollard - these are reasonably inexpensive but act as a physical and visual deterent to would be theives.

You can tow trailers up to a certain weight with your car driving licence. The weight you’re allowed to tow depends on when you got your licence.

You’ll need to know the weight of both the vehicle and trailer - also known as the ‘maximum authorised mass’ (MAM).

The MAM is listed in the owner’s manual and is normally shown on a plate or sticker fitted to the vehicle or trailer.

If you got your licence before 1 January 1997

You can usually drive a vehicle and trailer with a combined weight of up to 8,250kg MAMView your driving licence information to check.

You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

If you got your licence from 1 January 1997

You can tow a trailer that weighs up to 3,500kg MAM. This is known as a ‘category BE’ vehicle.

Your driving licence information shows which categories of vehicle you’re allowed to drive. View your driving licence information.

If you do not have ‘category BE’ on your physical driving licence, DVLA will add this the next time you renew your licence.

Training to tow a trailer

You can get training on how to tow a trailer safely, including caravans or horse boxes through training provider such as Safe Towing Scheme

Touring caravan insurance is an insurance policy designed to cover your caravan while it’s in use, stored, or being towed. It typically protects against damage, theft, or accidents, as well as liability claims when detached from your towing vehicle.

We offer both levels of cover. You can insure your touring caravan for its market value (what it would be worth if you were to sell it) or you can also choose New for Old (subject to the age of the caravan) where it would be replaced with a new one of the same or nearest similar model in the event that yours is written off.

The maximum your insurers will pay is the sum insured shown on your schedule.

When you get your quote you can select where you want to use your caravan, this means you only pay for the cover you need. If you choose UK only and later on decide to go to Europe you can increase your cover at any time.

If the caravan you are towing is over 750kg you will need to create a trailer account at
register-trailer.service.gov.uk

Although not mandated in the UK, most countries expect trailers over 750kg gross weight driving to or through their country to be registered and they may take enforcement action if the trailer is not registered. This applies to commercial and non-commercial trailers (i.e. caravans, horse boxes etc).

You should also check to make sure your motor insurance covers you for towing in Europe.

These ingenious units pack down incredibly small for towing, often resembling a utility trailer. Upon arrival at the campsite, they unfold to reveal a tent-like living space, typically with elevated sleeping berths and a ground-level living area. Many come equipped with an integrated kitchen unit, often featuring a hob and sink, which can be accessed from outside or in an awning. The main advantage of trailer tents lies in their compact size, lightweight nature, and ease of towing. They are economical to run and store, making them ideal for those with limited driveway space. Modern designs boast quick pitching times, with some units ready in under 15 minutes. While they offer more comfort than a traditional tent, they still retain a strong connection to the outdoors, with canvas walls and a less rigid structure.

Folding Caravans (or Pop-Top Caravans) take the concept of compactness a step further, folding caravans offer a more solid and secure living environment than trailer tents, while still being significantly more aerodynamic and easier to tow than conventional caravans. They feature rigid side walls that collapse down for transit, and then pop up to create a full-height interior. This clever design drastically reduces drag, leading to better fuel economy and a more stable towing experience. Inside, folding caravans typically offer a more furnished interior with fixed beds, seating areas, and often a compact galley kitchen and even a washroom in larger models. The solid walls provide better insulation and security compared to a trailer tent, making them more suitable for extended trips or cooler weather.
